The Necessity of Disorder

(Pre-Graduation) Thesis
2025

This pre-graduation thesis emerged from personal experiences of displacement and confusion after moving in between different countries. Encountering different cultural norms revealed underlying structures that shape behaviour, communication, and self-perception. Through reflecting on moments of discomfort, misunderstanding, and hesitation in social interactions, the research traces how internalised hierarchies and social expectations operate within South Korean society.

Drawing on post-structuralist thought, this thesis examines how politeness, respect, and bodily conduct function as mechanisms of power and social surveillance, rather than neutral or purely ethical practices. By questioning the idea of a fixed or correct way of thinking and acting, the research turns towards Deconstruction as a method to locate cracks within established systems. Rather than proposing radical rupture, it seeks subtle, everyday practices that may destabilise hierarchical structures and open space for alternative ways of relating, thinking, and existing.
